Just Give Me a Z-Pak!
We're talking antibiotics this year! For some of you this may be new information, some a refresher course. No matter where you are in your practice/life it is good to understand the basics of antibiotics.
Macrolides are a unique class of antibiotics because they can be both bacteriostatic and bactericidal. This duality allows them to be dose dependant when treating 'super bugs' 🐛
Bacteriostatic vs. Bactericidal: What’s the Difference?
Bacteriostatic antibiotics inhibit bacterial growth, preventing replication but not directly killing the bacteria. The immune system then clears the infection.
Bactericidal antibiotics kill bacteria outright, leading to bacterial cell death.
The higher the dose, the more bactericidal macrolides can be.
If you find advocates in your circle who want to receive the Medication Minute send them my way and I will be happy to add them.
