The Rise of Concierge Medicine

The concept of concierge used to be only in the hospitality sector, but now we are seeing bleed over into healthcare (no pun intended🤭). It has now become a buzzword! But what is it, and could it be right for you?

Concierge medicine is a healthcare model where patients pay a membership fee to a physician or practice for enhanced access, personalized care, and longer appointments. These practices often have fewer patients, allowing doctors to focus more on individual care.

Many providers, like patients are upset with the constraints put upon them by corporations, insurance providers and pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), when all they want to do is service their patients. The provider point of view is thus, they can:

  1. Have Better Work-Life Balance – Fewer patients mean less burnout.

  2. Spend More Time with Patients – Longer visits improve care quality.

  3. Have Reduced Administrative Burden – Less dependence on insurance reduces paperwork.

  4. Predictable Revenue – Membership fees provide financial stability.

How does this effect patient care? There are pros and cons, here are a few:

 ✅ More personalized, proactive care

✅ Shorter wait times and same-day appointments

✅ Better care coordination and preventive focus

❌ Higher costs for patients, as fees are often out-of-pocket

❌ Limited availability, as fewer doctors offer this model

Let's discuss the 'elephant in the room' - COST!

Insurance generally does NOT cover membership fees. Some concierge services bill insurance separately for covered services.

HSA/FSA might cover specific medical services within concierge care, but not the membership fee itself. Always check with your plan administrator.

I foresee more providers opening conceirge practices as the changes come down with the new government models of healthcare.

If and/or when the possibility of concierge medicine arrives on your doorstep ask yourself these questions before jumping on the bandwagon.

  • Do you want more time and direct access to your doctor?

  • Do you have complex or chronic conditions needing close management?

  • Are you frustrated with long wait times and rushed visits?

  • Can you afford the extra cost?

I know this is a new concept for most people and many folks just need to talk through what it would look like for themselves. Know that you can just reach out! I’m here to help you navigate this journey with compassion and understanding.
