Simple steps to prevent pneumonia – in the hospital and at home

Right in your hands. Hopefully, twice a day!

Did you know that your pearly whites can prevent pneumonia?

We were excited to come across this article yesterday ¬– we LOVE simple, common sense solutions for serious problems. We bet you do, too!

Pneumonia is a big problem for hospital patients. Turns out, it doesn’t have to be. This deadly disease is almost entirely preventable with good oral care. Why? Bacteria that accumulates on teeth and gums makes its way to the lungs, a set up for pneumonia. And pneumonia can be a set-up for even deadlier sepsis. When patients receive conscientious oral care, the rate of pneumonia drops by double digits.

But wait, there’s more. A good old toothbrush protects all of us. The bacteria that causes “everyday” cavities is the same bacteria that causes pneumonia. It’s an equal opportunity invader. You can thwart it by coughing and keeping physically active… but why give it any chance at all?

Low-tech, high reward. Give your teeth some love twice a day!
